Guitar pick selection 1 Year, 3 Months ago Karma: 0
When I bought my guitar it came with an assorted size of picks. They're all the same shape and diameter but,the thickness is different on each one. When I first started practicing I would use a (1.0mm) pick. It felt the most natural in my hand. Now I realize that it's easy to strum with that size but, harder to hit single strings with it. To pick single strings I use the (.50mm) pick. Its flimsy nature makes is easier to hit single strings without touching the other strings. But, it's harder to strum with it.

Do professionals change pick sizes due to the songs they're gonna play or is this a bad habit that I need to kick early on?

Also is there any pick type and or thickness you recommend for a beginner?

Hey Neef68,

The thing is with thin picks you lose attack and timing when picking single strings because there the pick is bending to much and there will be a slight delay so for lead stuff like alternate picking - single string stuff you'll want to use a heavier gauge.

For rhythm and strumming a thinner pick can add some nice percussive flavor to your strumming. But again you risk the chance of losing timing and attack.

What most p_layer_s learn how to do is use a midway heavy pick and choke up to the tip when playing lead and single notes and back off when strumming.

If you have anymore questions hop on the teacher support chat and I will help you out
